Ghanian Adinkra Symbols

The Ghanian Adinkra symbols originally created by the Bono people of Gyaman, are recognised by their distinctive characters, have many different meanings which convey traditional wisdom, life and often linked with proverbs. The symbols are also used for fabrics, pottery or for architectural features.
Inspired by the visual language of the Ghanian Adinkra symbols, I created a new type. The font exists out of rules according to the grid system of the symbols and a free type I created. The free type is a fusion of the visual expressions.

De Ghanese Adinkra-symbolen die oorspronkelijk zijn gemaakt door het Bono-volk van Gyaman, worden herkend aan hun onderscheidende karakters, hebben veel verschillende betekenissen die traditionele wijsheid, het leven en tien verbonden met spreekwoorden overbrengen. De symbolen worden ook gebruikt voor stoffen, aardewerk of voor architectonische kenmerken.
Geïnspireerd door de beeldtaal van de Ghanese Adinkra-symbolen, heb ik een nieuwe font gemaakt. Dit font bestaat uit een set met regels volgens een zelf gecreëerd rastersysteem en een vrije font waarbij ik heb geprobeerd om een samensmelting van de visuele uitingen te creëren.
Experimental font
Experimental font inspired by the visual language of the Adinkra symbols.
They almost look like little creatures morphing into the letters of the alphabet.
In the end as seen above I created a set of posters with the grid font and the experimental font together.
This exercise was a great way to experiment with type, it’s structures and be connected with the many possibilities.
Patterns on textile
I took the letters and began to reflect, rotate or reposition them.
They became sort of new symbols. As the symbols are used in textiles as well I created a set of patterns with the font.
