Y I N K A

A two-year-old me that got her hair braid in Lagos in a small hut, is a deeply engrained memory. The space, surroundings, the scents, the craft of the braiding in combination with the moral value of change and looking into the world with a curious eye. As a designer, till this day, my African heritage is still an important leading thread for me and my work.

After graduating from Design Academy Eindhoven, I pursue a career as a multidisciplinary and applied artist. From previous experiences in the professional field as designer and assisting with projects, I very much like the nomadic way of navigating the world in todays society, trends and current events.
Which also leads to my intuitive touch when working with color, shape and texture and therefore I approach design artistically. My aim is to communicate through storytelling, self initiated projects or collaborations.

For me, it’s the perfect balance to feel connected to the work.
This is what drives me in the design process.

AGBARA

AGBARA

Skin bleaching is still a global issue. To meet Western standards of beauty, people with darker skin – mostly women – use harsh chemicals to remove melanin from their skin. This project questions the wish for fairer skin, connected to a long history of white dominance. Inspired by West-African Manilla jewellery, once used as currency in the slave trade, Yinka Buutfeld created a set of awareness pieces. Using various passementerie and bleaching techniques on rough shipping rope, she transforms the shackles of the past into voluminous accessories. Bearing the marks of the chemical treatment, they send out a statement to cherish all skin colours. AGBARA, meaning power in Yoruba, empowers the body’s natural beauty.

This project was in collaboration with ceramist and designer Sterre ter Beek and TextielMuseum Tilburg
